Amazon.com Review
Equipped with system for monitoring work speed and a heater for boosting performance, this upright machine deep-cleans carpets and rugs by forcing a warm solution of water and cleansing concentrate into fibers and vacuuming up the dirty solution. The 1440-watt machine also scrubs bare floors (but not hardwood floors) and cleans stairs, upholstery, auto interiors, and even mattresses with onboard tools that spray dirty surfaces and crevices with the cleaning solution. A powered hand-tool that either brushes or vacuums at the flick of a switch accompanies the machine and attaches to a flexible accessories hose. The heater's advantage over ordinary machines is that it increases the cleaning solution's temperature (up to but not exceeding 180 degrees F) and prevents the solution from cooling. The electronic monitor displays lights showing whether the machine is going back and forth too fast for optimum performance. This model also has an applicator for spraying 3M Scotchgard dirt-and-stain protector (8 ounces included) onto a carpet. Here's how the machine works: A plastic bottle for filling with Bissell's Fiber Cleansing Formula (16 ounces included) fits into the base. A removable 1-gallon tank contains a bladder to hold clean water for mixing with the cleansing concentrate. (Dirty water vacuumed by the machine collects around the bladder.) A dial offers three settings for various tasks: normal, high traffic, and water rinse/carpet protector. A trigger on the machine's handle applies solution as desired. A flow-indicator spins when solution is applied and stops if the tank needs refilling. There's a switch for applying solution through the tools: tough-stain brush, upholstery tool, bare-floor head, crevice tool, pretreat wand. (The machine does not heat solution for tools.) The machine's 12-inch floating brush-roll automatically adjusts for carpet heights. Safe for virtually all carpets and upholstery fabrics, the deep-cleaning method can be turned off for dry-vacuuming delicate wool and Oriental rugs. The machine quickly assembles in five steps, using two bolts and nuts and two Phillips-head screws (all included). An especially understandable assembly/instruction booklet accompanies the machine, which carries a 1-year warranty against defects. --Fred Brack

5 out of 5 stars GREAT buy if you have cats!   January 1, 2009
I have cats, and until I got the Pro-Heat carpet cleaner, my berber carpet was spotted all the time because cats barf all the time. Now I just fire up the cleaner, and the carpet looks new again. It even picked up dirt the professionals left behind. Also, I had a little problem with the suction when I first used it, and Bissell's customer support was excellent! Easy to understand and concise.

1 out of 5 stars Bissell 7920 - Lemon from the start   August 2, 2008
My Bissell has never worked right, well possible one time. My mistake was to buy it when I had new carpet installed, so I would have it ready to clean. Dumb me..... assuming the product would work. I didn't take it out of the box for almost 2 years and then the warrenty was out. I have only attempted to use it about 4 times. Ordered replacement O rings. It didn't have an O ring on it. Also the long screws didn't fit or meet the hex nuts to hold the handle in place tightly, so I replace that. Still didn't work. Then it didn't dispense the shampoo, so replaced that. Now it won't hardly dispense water, as the flow cap indicator doesn't want to run, but part time. I really think it has something to do with the switch in the upper part of the handle. You can click it all day and it doesn't do anything. Of course that is not one of the replacement parts listed. I complained to Bissell and they told me to take it to a repair shop and have it checked!!! I am thinking about going with a Hoover Cleaner, but will have to research first. I paid 300.00 for this and that is a lot of money for a retired person on fixed income. Years ago, I had the green machine Bissel ( or I think that was the name of it, anyway it was a Bissel but not upright tank) and it was worthless too!!!) I don't think Bissell is a good brand anymore, if it ever was. Won't buy again.

5 out of 5 stars Bissell 7910 steam carpet cleaner   March 30, 2008

I have had my Bissell Model 7920 steam carpet cleaner since January 2003, and it has performed well in the intervening five years. And it has done this service in a multi-cat household, meaning there is fur on the carpet that gets picked up. But I think it's entirely reasonable to figure on having to clean out furballs from the carpet cleaner, even with vacuuming first. This is not unduly difficult, and that includes removing the plastic intake assembly, which in turn means removing two screws. But it's worth it to know that I am putting my Bissell away with no residues to dry into caked-up deposits.

Yes, this machine is heavy, but that's why it has large wheels. And you don't get a heavy-duty motor and brush system in a steam cleaner that weighs only a few pounds.

I finally had to replace a broken drive belt, which wasn't as difficult as I feared. I used the ProHeat belt accessory pack, which comes with both the flat primary drive belt and the secondary, internally-toothed brush drive belt. Since you have to remove the secondary drive belt to access the primary drive belt, I figured that I might as well replace the secondary drive belt while I was at it. The belt replacement kit from Bissell costs $3.99, so I bought two kits so I would have a spare. The total cost, including tax and shipping, was an entirely reasonable $13.55. That brings my preventative maintenance cost to less than $3 per year.

This is a well-made machine, with a nice, extra-long power cable. I have no regrets about purchasing this steam carpet cleaner.

2 out of 5 stars It worked for awhile   July 3, 2007

I am typing this review after just having burried my Bissell. Had I written it closer to the time of purchase, the rating would have been higher. Alas, I have fallen into the category of "it worked for awhile." For two years I was satisfied with this carpet cleaner. Admittedly, I never loved it. It is very heavy. While you are cleaning a single room that is fine, but if you have to move it up stairs or pick it up to move it around, it is burdensome. Anyway, after two years of "it's better than a rental and I don't have to call somebody" it stopped working. It no longer sprays. I tried all of the troubleshooting suggestions before taking the thing apart and it's doomed. I really hoped I would have gotten more than two years of service from it and my back is killing me.

4 out of 5 stars Plastic parts, but does a good job   February 14, 2007

I see that some reviewers complain about the flimsy plastic parts. Well, yes, that's true, but this machine is also priced within the consumer price range and is meant for OCCASIONAL use. You want metal parts, heavy duty use, you have to pay more.

I rated this machine highly because it cleans better than the professional cleaners that you have to schedule and they come in a truck. And the workers are not bonded so who are you letting into your house to check out all your belongings?

The Bissell machine is MUCH cheaper per cleaning session. I've used rented Rug Doctors and they're heavier, don't heat the water, and don't maneuver as well. Owning this machine takes the pressure off of a 24-hour limit for a rental. I have the flexibility to clean anytime; or do a very small job, or clean frequently. It's not perfect, but is a very good buy.
